Charles Tjiane, a veteran from the South African team

Brașov City is hosting the first world athletics championship ever organized in Romania! The 50KM World Running Championship takes place on September 1, 2019 in the town beneath Tâmpa.

Organized BY IAU (International Organization of Ultra-running), together with the Romanian Federation of Athletics and with the support of Ministry of Youth and Sport, Brașov City Hall and Braşov County Council, the 50KM World Running Championship will bring to Brașov the strongest Ultra-runners of the moment.

Athletes from 30 countries representing all continents will arrive at this championship, and before the competition starts, the Romanian Athletics Federation will introduce you the most famous athletes who will run through the streets of Brașov.

Charles Tjiane is one of the most experienced runners who will take part of the competition on September 1, 2019 in Brașov, the 50 km World Championship. Born on July 20, 1974, Charles has, at the age of 45, numerous races in the track record, and his results are among the best.

This year, at the Middelburg Marathon (a city in South Africa near Pretoria), Charles Tjiane placed first with a time of 2:48:55. He overcame the occupant of the second position, Kagisa Matjile, by almost 4 minutes, who finished the race with a time of 2:52:32. It should be noted that it was for the fourth time in a row that Charles ranked first in the Middelburg Marathon.

Comrades Marathon is another competition where the 45 years old South-African athlete has good results. In the last ten years, Charles has run eight times at the Comrades Marathon, and the best results he had were those from 2009 (3rd place in 05:34: 210 and 2017 (5th place in 05:45:26).

On a distance of 50KM, in 2019, Charles Tjiane had the best performance at the Loskop competition, when he was ranked 1st with a time of 2:48:56.

In addition to Charles Tjiane, the South African men’s team competing in Brașov will also have Bongmusa Mthembu, David Gatebe, Edward Mothibe, Longile Gongqa and Joseph Manyedi.

The 50KM World Running Championship takes place on September 1, 2019 in the city beneath Tâmpa and is organized by the IAU (International Ultra-Running Organization), together with the Romanian Athletics Federation, with the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sport and of the City Hall of Brașov and is co-financed by the Brașov County Council.
